Two prisoners escape from Adamawa prison
Two inmates described by security sources as politically exposed suspects have reportedly escaped from the Security Custodial Centre in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the two men, who sources said were transferred to the facility about three weeks ago following a crackdown on suspected political thugs operating around the Mubi axis.
The operation was reportedly initiated by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri after he visited the area and called for the dismantling of criminal networks allegedly linked to political violence and other security threats.
Fintiri had vowed that his administration would not relent in its efforts to deal with individuals involved in violent activities and insecurity in the state.
Sources said the governor expressed anger over the reported escape, prompting security agencies, including operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to begin efforts to locate the suspects.
The Nigerian Correctional Service has, however, remained silent on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the two inmates from its custody.
Attempts by reporters to obtain comments from officials of the service at its Adamawa State headquarters in Jimeta, Yola, have been unsuccessful since the incident was reported last Thursday.
On the day the reports emerged, the state Comptroller, Abduljalil Odunlami Ajani, was said to be away on an official inspection visit.
The following day, reporters were referred to the Deputy Public Relations Officer, who said he was not authorised to speak on the matter.
During another visit to the headquarters on Monday morning, officials reportedly said the comptroller was unavailable while the Public Relations Officer was unwell.
