PSC orders mandatory retirement for four DIGs amid policy concerns
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a directive for the compulsory retirement of four deputy inspectors-general (DIGs) of police to prevent seniority conflicts within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
According to the PSC, this action was taken under its statutory powers, in accordance with the Third Schedule, Part 1 M, para A&B of the 1999 Constitution, reinforced by Section 6 of the Commissions (Establishment) Act 2001, para a, c, d, e, &f.
The affected DIGs are Dan-Mallam Mohammed, Moses Ambakina Jitiboh, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, and Adeleke Adeyinka Bode.
PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, stated, “Following the appointment of the acting inspector-general of police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on the 19th of June, 2023, by the President, the commission had expected that in line with the respected tradition of discipline and regimented culture of the Nigeria Police Force, those DIGs who held higher ranks prior to his elevation would either opt for voluntary retirement or choose to leave the Force.”
“However, as no such applications were received from any of them despite ample time, the commission has decided to enforce compulsory retirement to maintain discipline, which is fundamental to the Force, and to discourage rank reversal that undermines the authority of the inspector-general.”
“As a result, the former DIGs have been instructed to promptly initiate their compulsory retirement, effective from Friday, 25th August, 2023. The commission acknowledges their significant contributions and efforts towards the peace and security of our nation and wishes them success in their future pursuits during retirement.”
Simultaneously, the PSC has sanctioned the appointment of four Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to be elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police. This promotion is subject to the approval of the commission’s board and is intended to replace the retired DIGs.
Ani added that the newly promoted DIGs, who have no pending disciplinary matters or serious medical conditions, are from the same respective geopolitical regions as the retirees. The appointed DIGs are Ibrahim Sani Ka’oje, Daniel Sokari-Pedro, Ayuba Ekpeji, and Usman Nagogo.
