Nigeria’s Super Eagles have fallen eight places in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, dropping from 36th to 44th globally.
The rankings, published on FIFA’s website on Thursday, also show the Super Eagles slipping from fourth to fifth in Africa. Morocco remains the continent’s top team, ranking 14th in the world, followed by Senegal in 17th place globally.
Egypt ranks third in Africa and 33rd globally, while Algeria takes the fourth spot on the continent, occupying 37th position in the world.
The Super Eagles’ decline is likely tied to their underwhelming performance during matchdays 5 and 6 of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. They managed a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo.
On the global stage, World Cup champions Argentina retain the top spot, followed by France in second and European champions Spain in third. England holds fourth place, with Brazil in fifth. Portugal and the Netherlands occupy sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
Belgium has slipped two spots to eighth, while Italy and Germany remain steady in ninth and 10th places.
The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking is set to be released on December 19, 2024.
