Price of refilling cooking gas per kg in Nigeria

Published

on

As of February 1, 2025, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has seen a sharp increase across Nigeria, significantly affecting household expenses.

Current Retail Prices:

  • Per Kilogram: ₦1,300
  • 3kg Cylinder: ₦3,900
  • 5kg Cylinder: ₦6,500
  • 6kg Cylinder: ₦7,800
  • 10kg Cylinder: ₦13,000
  • 12.5kg Cylinder: ₦16,250 – ₦17,000 (Up 41.6% from ₦12,000 in July 2024)

Factors Driving Price Hikes:

  1. Global Crude Oil Prices – LPG costs are tied to global oil markets, and fluctuations impact import prices.
  2. Exchange Rate Instability – A weaker Naira has driven up import costs, pushing retail prices higher.
  3. Seasonal Demand – Increased usage during festive seasons causes temporary price spikes.

Regional Price Variations:

  • North-East: Highest average price for a 5kg refill – ₦6,929
  • South-East: ₦6,835
  • South-West: Lowest average price – ₦5,400

Depot Prices (20 Metric Tons as of Jan 31, 2025):

  • NIPCO: ₦20.1 million
  • NAVGAS: ₦20.5 million

Impact on Households:

The rising cost of LPG has forced many households to seek alternative cooking methods, such as firewood and charcoal, which pose environmental and health risks.

Government Response:

To mitigate the crisis, the Nigerian government is promoting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cheaper, cleaner alternative through the Presidential CNG Initiative, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for energy affordability.
