Medical and dental academics at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO) and their colleagues at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital (FUHSTHO) have inaugurated the pioneer executives of the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), FUHSO Chapter.

The historic ceremony, held at the FUHSTHO Renal Unit Conference Hall, brought together senior medical scholars, consultants, and academics, who resolved to consolidate their collective voice under NAMDA for the advancement of the profession within the university community.

Declaring the meeting open, Dr. Omoregie Irowa of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recalled that the idea for the FUHSO Chapter was first mooted at a July meeting of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) FUHSTHO Chapter. He stressed the importance of establishing NAMDA as a platform to champion the welfare and professional growth of academic doctors.

In his remarks, Professor Stephen Obekpa Abah, immediate past Acting Vice-Chancellor of FUHSO, described the inauguration as a milestone in the history of the young institution. He outlined the structural requirements for setting up a viable Chapter and charged the congress to elect committed officers who would steer the association’s affairs.

Other speakers, including Professor Sylvanus Edache Okpe and Professor Audu Onyemocho, emphasized unity and urged members to support NAMDA’s mission.

Following deliberations, the congress unanimously elected the following pioneer executives:

  • Professor Sylvanus Edache Okpe – Chairman
  • Professor Audu Onyemocho – Secretary
  • Patricia Musa – Financial Secretary
  • Yemisi Anebi – Treasurer
  • Omoregie Irowa – Public Relations Officer (PRO)

In his acceptance speech, Professor Okpe thanked members for their trust and pledged to position NAMDA FUHSO Chapter as a formidable voice for academic doctors. He underscored the need for synergy between MDCAN and NAMDA to safeguard the welfare of members and improve medical education.

To give national recognition to the development, Professor Abah placed a call to the NAMDA National President, who expressed delight at the establishment of the FUHSO Chapter. The President encouraged members to rally around their new leaders and requested the submission of the executives’ details to the national secretariat.

The meeting, attended by 15 members, ended with a group photograph after a call for sustained communication through a dedicated WhatsApp platform. It was also resolved that the inauguration be publicized in both local and national media.
