Senate postpones plenary resumption to October 7
The Nigerian Senate has shifted its return from annual recess, moving the plenary resumption date from September 23 to October 7, 2025.
An internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, informed senators of the new schedule and apologised for the late notice.
“The resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025,” the memo stated, urging lawmakers to “adjust their schedules accordingly.”
Although no official reason was provided, sources told The PUNCH the extension would allow lawmakers to fully participate in Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
The red chamber had initially adjourned on July 24 for its annual break. At that time, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the recess as an act of “chamber reciprocity,” aligning with the legislative calendar of the House of Representatives.
