Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down from his position as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Appointed in 2015, Yakubu successfully completed two consecutive five-year tenures at the helm of the nation’s electoral body.

On Tuesday, he handed over leadership to May Agbamuche, one of INEC’s National Commissioners, who will now serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head.

In his farewell message, the former INEC boss urged his colleagues to extend full support and cooperation to the acting chairperson during the transition period.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce Yakubu’s successor soon.

The appointment of a new INEC Chairman is anticipated to top discussions at the upcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for later this week.

Details later.
