BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu carried out preparatory act of terrorism – Justice James Omotosho
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Count 1 of the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
DAILY POST reports that Kanu is standing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on terrorism and related offences.
Delivering the judgment on Thursday, Justice Omotosho ruled that Kanu was guilty of committing an act of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria by issuing threats during a live broadcast that “people will die, and the world will stand still.”
The judge stated: “Mr Kanu knew what he was doing. He was bent on carrying out these threats without consideration even for his own people. From the incontrovertible evidence, it is clear that the defendant carried out a preparatory act of terrorism. He had the duty to explain himself but failed to do so.”
The court subsequently convicted Kanu on the first count and is still delivering judgment on the remaining charges.
Reacting to the development, Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, wrote on X:
“The judge just convicted Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Counts 1 and 2 (acts in furtherance of terrorism). There’s palpable tension in the courtroom, as the judge is presently analyzing Count 3, ominously.”
