Why Egbetokun resigned as IGP — Presidency confirms exit of ex-police boss

The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stating that the police chief stepped down due to pressing family concerns requiring his full attention.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this while responding to enquiries on Tuesday.

According to him, the former police boss submitted a resignation letter earlier in the day.

“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” Onanuga said.

However, multiple Presidency sources revealed that Egbetokun was allegedly asked to step aside during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.

A senior official familiar with the development, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the decision followed a private discussion between the President and the police chief.

“It was in that meeting he was asked to go,” the source disclosed.
