Five dead, 10 injured in Abeokuta–Lagos highway auto crash
No fewer than five persons, including two children, have been confirmed dead while 10 others sustained severe injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred on Thursday at Iyana Egbado along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash involved a lone white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD809XC, carrying 20 passengers at the time of the incident, which occurred at about 11:12 a.m.
According to the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, Odunsi Afolabi, the passengers included six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.
He said the accident claimed the lives of two children, one adult male, and two adult females, while 10 other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. Five others escaped unhurt.
“The crash occurred at about 11:12 am and was reported at 1115HRS. FRSC rescue operatives from RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene at 1120HRS, with a response time of five minutes,” Afolabi said.
He added that injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicated that excessive speed and overloading were responsible for the crash.
“The probable causes of the crash were speeding and overloading. The road was paved and weather condition at the time was cloudy,” he stated.
Reacting to the incident, Sector Commander Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, and other traffic violations.
He also advised drivers to strictly comply with road safety regulations, especially during the festive period, noting that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
