Gunmen kill soldier, abduct residents in Ogun dredging site attack
Gunmen have reportedly killed a soldier at a private dredging site located in Magbon Etido community, Mowe, Ogun State.
According to The Nation, the attackers also allegedly abducted some residents in the nearby Karanla community before security forces intervened and engaged them.
Sources cited by the publication said the armed men initially tried to kidnap an expatriate working at the dredging site, but the target managed to escape narrowly.
In a statement on Monday, Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, described the incident as an “isolated criminal attack,” stressing that it was not linked to any bandit group.
He confirmed that a soldier on duty was killed during the attack, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.
Babaseyi added that police operatives, working alongside the military, quickly responded to the distress call and have since launched coordinated operations aimed at tracking down the attackers.
Preliminary investigations, according to him, have not shown any connection between the incident and organised banditry, while tactical operations are still ongoing.
The command also assured residents that the area has been brought under control, with additional security deployment in place and no reason for panic.
