Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has responded to the criticism that followed her advice encouraging unemployed women to venture into small-scale businesses such as frying akara (bean cakes).

The advice, contained in a viral video, sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians criticising the First Lady over the remarks.

Reacting while speaking in Jigawa State on Monday, Mrs Tinubu said she was not deterred by the backlash, insisting that the programme was intended to support vulnerable Nigerians.

According to her, the initiative is not limited to akara sellers but also provides support to tomato sellers, maize sellers, vegetable sellers and other petty traders.

“I heard people talking about akara sellers. It is not only akara sellers. We are also supporting tomato sellers, maize sellers, vegetable sellers, and many other petty traders,” she said.

The First Lady added that those benefiting from the programme appreciate the intervention and dismissed the criticism surrounding her comments.

“I know the beneficiaries appreciate it, and we’re not intimidated by the wrong reports. We will continue to make sure that we care for our people,” she said.
