‘They want one-party state, we won’t allow it’ — ADC tells Judiciary
The Deputy National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Oladimeji Fabiyi, has called on the judiciary to uphold its independence and resist any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
Fabiyi made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Trust TV while reacting to the recent Court of Appeal decision that upheld an order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising ADC state congresses.
He accused the government of working towards creating a one-party state and urged Nigerians to pay attention to what he described as broader threats to opposition parties.
“The judiciary should not help Tinubu to destroy our democracy. We will not allow it. As tough and serious as the military was, it never subjected our judiciary to this ridicule, to the point that our judiciary has gone to the abyss,” Fabiyi said.
He alleged that there were moves to weaken opposition parties, adding that similar challenges were affecting the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the Labour Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“They want to turn the country into a one-party state. It’s not going to work. We are not going to allow it. Our legal team are handling whatever is in court. It does not stop us. We are still going on with activities everywhere,” he said.
Fabiyi assured that the party would continue its activities despite the legal challenges, while calling on Nigerians to understand the situation facing opposition parties across the country.
