Nigeria’s debt hits N166.79tn, each citizen owes N716,822 — Atiku

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, says Nigeria’s debt burden has risen to N166.79 trillion, putting the estimated debt per citizen at N716,822.

Atiku disclosed the figure in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, on Monday.

The statement came amid reports that the Federal Government is seeking a fresh N1.5 trillion loan from the World Bank.

According to the Debt Management Office DMO, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at N166.79 trillion as of June 2026.

Atiku’s statement raised concerns over the country’s growing debt burden and the implications of additional borrowing.
