Nigerians, not Wike, will decide next president — ADC Chieftain
Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his comments on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential ambition.
In a statement issued on Monday, Eze described Wike’s claim that Atiku would never become Nigeria’s president as unfortunate, arrogant and undemocratic.
He argued that no individual, regardless of political influence or public office, has the power to determine who becomes Nigeria’s president in a democratic system.
The ADC chieftain challenged Wike to explain the “political structure” he frequently boasts about, asking whether it was based on genuine public support or the alleged misuse of state institutions and government power.
“It is important that Wike tells Nigerians what he means by structure. Is it the structure of the people or the structure of power? Is it a structure founded on democratic principles or one built around the intimidation of opponents and the manipulation of institutions? These are questions Nigerians deserve answers,” he said.
Eze maintained that worsening economic hardship, insecurity and the rising cost of living had significantly changed the political mindset of Nigerians, making it increasingly difficult for any politician to influence election outcomes through personal power.
According to him, the era when a few political figures could determine the country’s leadership behind closed doors is gradually coming to an end.
He also noted that many young Nigerians are becoming more politically conscious and determined to shape the country’s future through the ballot box.
The ADC stalwart further reminded Wike that political influence is neither permanent nor absolute, stressing that history has shown that power ultimately belongs to the people.
He warned against what he described as the illusion of political invincibility, saying no politician remains relevant forever.
Eze added that rather than engaging in political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections, government officials should focus on addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
He expressed confidence that the ADC provides a credible platform for Nigerians seeking democratic reforms and political change.
“The unfortunate impression being created by Wike is that the destiny of Nigeria rests in his hands.
“Nothing can be farther from the truth. Nigeria belongs to over three hundred million citizens and not to one individual, no matter how highly placed. The occupant of Aso Rock in 2027 will be determined by Nigerians and not by the personal wishes of any political office holder,” he said.
Eze also warned that any political structure built on intimidation, manipulation or abuse of power would ultimately fail when confronted with the collective will of the electorate.
He urged Wike to focus on his responsibilities as FCT Minister instead of making divisive political statements.
“Nobody owns Nigeria. Nobody has the monopoly of political relevance. Nobody possesses a private franchise over the Presidency of this country. The sovereign will of Nigerians remains supreme and will ultimately prevail over every scheme, every structure and every attempt to undermine the democratic choice of the people. The 2027 election will be decided by Nigerians and Nigerians alone,” he added.
