Abuja, Nigeria – President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has expressed deep concern regarding the growing presence of hoodlums within the National Assembly complex. The influx of these individuals has raised security issues and left lawmakers feeling threatened.

He stated this in a recent address to the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).

As the 10th National Assembly settles down for legislative activities, the Senate and Reps wings have become hotspots for loitering individuals who have no legitimate business within the premises. These hoodlums have been begging and causing a security breach, affecting not only lawmakers but also the staff of the National Assembly.

During the courtesy call of the NASC members on the Senate President at the NASS complex in Abuja, Ahmed Kadi Amshi, the Chairman of the NASC, presented various challenges faced by the Commission. One of the prominent issues raised was the increasing presence of unauthorized persons in the National Assembly complex.

Responding to the concerns raised by the Commission’s Chairman, President Akpabio acknowledged the significant resources allocated to staff welfare. However, he emphasized that the issues at hand extended beyond staff comforts and allowances.

The Senate President decried the deteriorating infrastructure, unclean environment, and overall lack of security at the complex. Incidents have been reported where lawmakers lost their phones and other valuable belongings due to the presence of hoodlums who strategically position themselves near offices and key areas.

“We are aware that the entire complex is under renovation. We must also look after the environment. It is not all about the staff; we would like to see a cleaner environment and a secure complex,” stated Akpabio. He emphasized that the National Assembly represents the very symbol of democracy, and the 10th Senate is determined to make history through impactful legislation.

The President of the Senate called for measures to address the issue promptly, ensuring that the National Assembly complex remains a safe and efficient working environment for lawmakers and staff alike.
