EPL: Perry Groves urges Arteta to bench Gyökeres for Havertz

Former Arsenal midfielder Perry Groves has advised Mikel Arteta to bench Viktor Gyökeres in upcoming matches, insisting Kai Havertz should remain the club’s first-choice striker.

Speaking in an interview with Metro, Groves argued that Gyökeres’ goal tally should not automatically secure him a starting role, adding that Havertz offers better link-up play and understanding with teammates.

He pointed to Arsenal’s performance against Manchester City as an example of the difference between both forwards.

“I’m a supporter of Gyökeres. I’ve defended Gyökeres throughout the season because I appreciate his attitude and playing style. He has still managed to score 18 goals,” Groves said.

He added: “He is adapting to our system, and we are becoming accustomed to him, but what I appreciated about the match against Man City was not only our aggressive pressing but also our ability to play long balls more swiftly.

“David Raya played a quick long ball to Havertz on the touchline, diagonally, allowing Havertz to either hold the ball up or flick it on. He likely provides a bit more control, as he is more adept at holding the ball, which means Gyökeres may need to bide his time.”

Havertz also scored in the clash against Manchester City after pressing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into an error and capitalising on the mistake.
