Fresh concerns have emerged in Otukpo, Benue State, following claims by residents that a building located near Ojali has repeatedly been used as a collection point for ransom payments by kidnappers.

The allegation was brought to public attention by citizen journalist and activist, Meddy Olotu, who visited the location and shared a video highlighting the concerns raised by members of the community.

According to Olotu, several residents and victims of kidnapping incidents have allegedly identified the building as a location where relatives of abducted persons are often directed to deliver ransom payments.

He claimed that the site was mentioned in connection with the abduction of candidates travelling to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination earlier this year. Olotu also said another victim he interviewed separately identified the same location as the point where ransom was paid to secure the release of a kidnapped relative.

The building, which belongs to an association, is surrounded by thick vegetation, is situated a short distance from Ojali. Residents who spoke on the matter alleged that individuals involved in collecting ransom either wait in front of or behind the structure during transactions.

Olotu called on security agencies to investigate the claims and intensify surveillance around the area.

He also urged relevant authorities and community members to clear the overgrown bushes surrounding the building and adjoining road, arguing that improved visibility could help enhance security and deter criminal activities.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued any official statement regarding the allegations.

The claims by residents could not be independently verified.
