Godwin Emefiele resigns as Yemi Cardoso takes over as CBN Governor

Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, the acting head of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), officially assumed his role at the CBN headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

This move follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In a similar vein, the designated Deputy Governors have also taken up their positions in acting capacities, subsequent to the formal resignations of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.

The CBN officially confirmed this development in a press release on Friday, signed by Isa AbdulMumin, the Director of Corporate Communications at the bank.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu, on September 15, 2023, appointed Cardoso and the Deputy Governors in acting capacities, awaiting confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

Cardoso and the Deputy Governors were sworn in at a brief ceremony held at the Bank’s Head Office in Abuja on Friday.

The newly appointed Deputy Governors are:

  1. Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro
  2. Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo
  3. Mr. Philip Ikeazor
  4. Dr. Bala M. Bello

Cardoso, with a rich background as an Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, former Chairman of Citi Nigeria, and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State, brings over three decades of managerial experience to the position.

The acting CBN Governor holds a degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies from Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, United States of America.
