The Benue zone of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related offences, said it rescued 810 victims of human trafficking and secured 22 convictions in seven years.

The Zonal Commander in charge of the zone, comprising Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states, Mr Aganran Alao-Ganiyu, made this know at the Benue Command headquarters in Makurdi.

Alao-Ganiyu said “During this period of COVID-19 pandemic, we have been able to rescue 49 victims, investigated 24 cases and awaiting arraignment of 11 persons in various courts.

“Some high profile personalities are also involved in the human and child trafficking business and these people are Nigerians and Benue indigenes, who are not based in Nigeria, but used their connections in trafficking their victims to various Africa and European countries, including Ivory Coast, Libya and Italy.

“However, we are already collaborating with the embassies of these countries and INTERPOL to fish them out and repatriate them.”
