The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has strongly criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia for the worsening security situation in the state. The PDP alleged that criminal elements are taking advantage of the governor’s alleged incompetence to carry out their malicious activities.

In a statement released to journalists on Monday in Makurdi by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, the PDP expressed deep concern about the state’s deteriorating security situation. Iortyom pointed out that almost every day in Benue is marred by acts of terror perpetrated by either Fulani herdsmen or bandits, resulting in loss of lives, destruction, hunger, and exacerbating the poverty faced by ordinary citizens.

The statement highlighted recent incidents, including reports of Fulani herdsmen blocking the Makurdi – Naka Road and bandits terrorizing parts of the Sankera axis throughout the night. The PDP criticized Governor Alia for not appointing a Security Adviser despite being in office for over four months, suggesting a lack of competence and professionalism in handling security matters.

Furthermore, the PDP recalled the governor’s alleged confession of having a relationship with bandits, whom he referred to as “brothers in the bush.” The party also pointed out claims made by certain Fulani herdsmen groups that they supported Governor Alia during the elections in exchange for relaxed anti-open grazing restrictions.

The PDP urged Governor Alia to prioritize the safety of Benue residents over any past agreements with groups associated with terrorism and take decisive actions against them. The party criticized the governor’s silence on the issue, emphasizing that it only emboldens the terrorists and poses a significant threat to the state and its people.
