No threat of exit from Kwankwaso – NDC
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed reports that its presidential running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the party over internal disputes in Kano State.
NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the claims as unfounded speculation aimed at undermining the party’s progress.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Saturday night, Director alleged that the rumours were being fuelled by political opponents and individuals opposed to the party’s growth.
“At no time did our leader, Kwankwaso, threaten to leave the party. Those were merely conjectures and media speculations intended to demarket the party, and we know where they are coming from,” he said.
He further accused elements within the ruling party and some opposition figures of spreading misinformation to create divisions within the NDC.
Director also cited instances of alleged anti-party activities in some states, including Delta, where he claimed an incumbent politician supported multiple aspirants against a party candidate.
The clarification follows widespread reports that the former Kano State governor was considering leaving the NDC after some candidates reportedly loyal to the Kwankwasiyya movement were replaced in Kano State.
The NDC had earlier announced changes to several candidates submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction, citing the need to uphold an existing power-sharing agreement within the party.
According to a document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the adjustments were made to reflect an earlier understanding on the distribution of party offices and elective positions between the established NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
The party maintains that the changes were carried out in line with internal agreements and insists that Kwankwaso remains committed to the NDC and its objectives.
