Retired General Rabe Abubakar dies in bandits’ custody
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abdulkadir Abubakar while he was being held by bandits.
The announcement was made on Saturday through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu.
According to the commissioner, the former military officer succumbed to health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
Dr. Mu’azu explained that the state government, working alongside security agencies, had made extensive efforts to secure the release of the retired General.
However, despite those coordinated attempts, the operation ended unsuccessfully.
The commissioner described the incident as a painful setback for both Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement read.
The government stated that the abduction and eventual death of the retired officer represent a significant tragedy, not only for his family and the people of Katsina State but also for the nation he served with distinction for many years.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, associates, and Nigerians mourning the loss.
The governor characterized the development as a “dark moment” and said it highlights the persistent security challenges confronting communities across the country.
“This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for a united and intensified effort in confronting the forces of insecurity threatening the peace and stability of our communities,” Governor Radda stated.
Governor Radda reassured residents that his administration remains committed to tackling banditry and other criminal activities. He emphasized that those responsible for the retired General’s kidnapping and death would not escape justice.
The governor also reiterated the state’s readiness to continue collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security, protect citizens, and restore peace across Katsina State.
As sympathies continue to pour in from different parts of the country, the state government appealed to citizens to remember the family of the late military officer in their prayers during this difficult time.
“May the soul of Retired Major General Rabe Abdulkadir Abubakar rest in eternal peace,” the statement added.
