Shasha Market crisis: VP Osinbajo backs Hausa, says every Nigerian has constitutional right to live, work anywhere

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo seems to have thrown his weight behind Hausa people against his Yoruba kinsmen in the ongoing clash between the two ethnic groups in Shasha area of Oyo State.

IDOMA VOICE recalls that Yoruba and Hausa youths have been at war in the area with the former telling the latter to leave.

Reacting, however, Osinbajo said traders from north have been doing business in the southwest for ages now and such should not be tolerated under the law.

He said in a statement on Monday.

“Shasha market has been a melting pot for traders bringing foodstuff from the North to the Southwest for decades.

“For decades traders from the North have done business with their brothers from the Southwest and they have lived in peace and even inter-married.

Shasha represents unity.

“So when a disagreement arises between individuals or a criminal act is committed by one against the other we must ensure that we see it for what it is, a criminal act, which must be punished according to law. Not an ethnic conflict.

“Every Nigerian has a constitutional right to live, work and enjoy their lives in safety, peace under the law.”
