Nigerian singing sensation and award-winning artist, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, recently opened up about her early days as a gospel artiste, sharing her experiences of financial challenges in the industry.

During an interview on MTV Base Africa’s “Official Naija Top 10” segment, Simi revealed that in her gospel music days, she used to receive meager payments for her performances, with fees as low as N5,000 to N10,000. The highest she ever earned was N70,000, which she considered a significant milestone. Despite the modest earnings, she remained committed to her faith, faithfully paying her tithe even from those meager earnings.

The ‘Duduke’ crooner disclosed that financial constraints ultimately led her to make a tough decision. Unable to afford studio sessions and promotional activities, she had to face the harsh reality of the gospel music industry’s financial limitations. As a result, she eventually made the difficult choice to switch to secular music to pursue better opportunities and a more sustainable career path.

Simi also shared her regrets about signing with a record label during that time, acknowledging that it was a decision she continues to lament to this day.

Through her candid revelation, Simi sheds light on the challenges faced by gospel artists in the industry and the often tough decisions they must make to sustain their careers. Her journey from gospel music to becoming a successful secular artist serves as a testament to her resilience and determination to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of her musical aspirations.

As Simi’s star continues to shine in the Nigerian music scene, her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists and a reminder of the persistence required to navigate the complexities of the music industry.
