Former Governor of Benue State and immediate past lawmaker representing Benue North East District in the Senate, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, has officially announced his candidacy for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking to succeed Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.

His declaration came during a meeting with the Benue State Working Committee (SWC) of the party, led by Sir John Ngbede, at the party’s Secretariat in Makurdi over the weekend.

In a statement shared on the verified social media account of his Media Aide, Mr. Bede Bartholomew, Dr. Suswam entered the race with the aim of completing the truncated tenure of Dr. Ayu, which was cut short due to a court ruling. During the meeting, Senator Suswam, warmly welcomed by the SWC members, appealed for their support.

Bede revealed that Senator Suswam also addressed the Zonal Expanded Caucus of the PDP in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, informing members of his candidacy.

In his social media post, Bede stated, “Earlier today in Katsina-Ala, the PDP held its first Zonal Expanded Caucus for the year 2024 at the residence of Sen. Gabriel Suswam. The meeting, convened by the Zonal Vice Chairman, Azua Ashongo, was well attended by stakeholders, including Sen. Suswam, who announced his bid for the National Chairmanship position, as per the party’s guidelines which designate it to the North Central, and particularly Benue State.”

“The gathering showcased the unity of our party, with distinguished personalities in attendance such as the PDP Benue 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Titus Uba, who received a special standing ovation upon arrival, along with key figures like member of the BOT, Mr. Margaret Icheen, the North Central Secretary, Maurice Tsav, former Minister Prof. Nicholas Ada, member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Shima Prince Jiji, and former National Assembly members, Bob Tyogh and Dr. Richard Grande.”

“Also present were former governorship aspirants Terkaa Ucha and Tertsea Gbiseh, as well as the Director-General of Zone ‘A’ 2023 Campaign Council, Dr. Paul Ubwa, and members of his council, among others.”
