Gunmen kill Federal Poly registrar in Imo State
Imo State has been plunged into anxiety following the targeted assassination of Innocent Obi, the Deputy Registrar of Federal Polytechnic, Uwana, Ebonyi State. This shocking incident occurred in the Ezeala/Ezike autonomous community, located in Umuezeala, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state. The assailants, posing as Biafra agitators, are believed to be responsible for the crime.
The late Innocent Obi, affectionately known as “Onye Army” by the local community, had retired from military service before joining the staff of the Federal Polytechnic Uwana. He had recently applied for the position of the institution’s next substantive registrar before his tragic demise.
According to reports, Obi had returned to his hometown, Umuoboama village, to attend the burial of a relative who was a soldier killed in the Northeast. Following the funeral weekend, tragedy struck when a group of over six hoodlums, clad in military and police uniforms, invaded his family home around 10 p.m.
These criminals broke through the main door and subjected Obi to a brutal attack using machetes and axes. His cries for help alerted villagers, but the assailants fired shots into the air, forcing potential rescuers to retreat. They subsequently abducted “Dee Onye Army” on that fateful Friday night, leaving his house stained with blood.
In the aftermath, a search party was organized by the concerned villagers. Tragically, it wasn’t until late Sunday afternoon that they received word about a decomposing body discovered between Ehime Mbano and Ahiazu Mbaise. Upon reaching the scene, the searchers were met with the horrific sight of Innocent Obi’s lifeless body, bearing signs of gruesome violence.
In his role, “Dee Onye Army” had been instrumental in helping local youth secure admission to educational institutions. His humble and benevolent nature earned him the respect of many, and he had only recently begun building a house in the village, which tragically remained unfinished at the time of his death.
