Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission considers relocation to Lagos

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) is reportedly contemplating relocating some of its units to Lagos, following recent controversial moves such as the relocation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the city.

NUPRC made this revelation in a memo dated February 14, signed by Kelechi Ofoegbu, the Executive Commissioner for Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning.

The commission cited the aim of enhancing service delivery, reducing operational costs, and optimizing assets in Lagos as reasons for the proposed relocation.

The memo instructed supervisors to identify units capable of operating independently with minimal supervision by February 23, 2024.

“In line with our objectives of improving organizational efficiency, driving the industry’s growth, and managing office accommodation in Abuja, we are exploring the possibility of relocating certain units to Lagos,” the memo stated.

The move has stirred controversy reminiscent of previous relocations, with Senator Ali Ndume, Chief Whip of the Senate, opposing the transfer of CBN and FAAN headquarters to Lagos. Some northern groups have alleged ulterior motives behind the relocations, portraying them as part of a plot against the North. However, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and other groups have expressed support for the government’s actions.
