Lawmakers propose 6-year single tenure for President in Nigeria

A group of 35 lawmakers, known as the Reformers, has proposed significant amendments to the 1999 Constitution. Key changes include introducing a single six-year term for the President and governors.

Additionally, the Reformers suggest creating two vice-presidential positions, one representing the southern and the other the northern regions of Nigeria.

Another major proposal by the group involves rotating the Presidency among the six geopolitical zones and conducting all elections simultaneously.

During a briefing at the National Assembly on Monday, the lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, revealed they have drafted 50 proposed amendments, with six bills already listed on the House floor.

“One amendment seeks to ensure that the President and the first Vice President hail from the same region (either north or south), with the first Vice President assuming the Presidency if the President becomes incapacitated. Additionally, we propose a Vice President for Administration and Economy,” Ugochinyere explained.

Ugochinyere emphasized that the current Constitution contains significant gaps that need to be addressed.
