Corps members express frustration over delay in new N77,000 allowance

Corps members have expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its promise of a N77,000 allowance, which was announced in September.

The delayed payment has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian youths who are serving the country.

In September, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) announced an increase in the monthly allowance for corps members from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision was outlined in a letter signed by Mr. Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission.

However, despite the announcement, corps members have continued to receive the previous amount of N33,000.

“If they had no intention of paying the increased allowance, or if they are unable to do so now, why make the announcement in the first place?” questioned Laolu, a corps member in Kwara State. “We are part of the government’s responsibility. If they can’t pay it, they should retract the announcement so we stop hoping and being disappointed.”

Similarly, Damilola, a corps member in Kebbi State, expressed skepticism: “Trusting this government is risky. If they pay that money before my Passing Out parade, I’ll be very surprised.”

Idris, serving in Abuja, highlighted the challenge of surviving on the current allowance: “They paid us N33,000 yesterday. I’m serving in Abuja, and the amount can’t even cover transportation, let alone other expenses. How are we supposed to make ends meet?”

Efforts to reach Caroline Embu, the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, for comment were unsuccessful. Her phone lines were unreachable, and she had not responded to messages at the time of this report.
