We’re in Uyo to beat Nigeria, qualify for World Cup – Rohr

Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, says his team has arrived in Uyo with one clear mission, to claim all three points against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Rohr, who managed Nigeria between 2016 and 2021, shares a deep connection with the country, having led the Super Eagles to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Now at the helm of the Benin Republic national team, the 72-year-old German is on the verge of guiding the Cheetahs to their first-ever World Cup appearance, a feat that could come with a positive result in today’s 2026 World Cup qualifying clash.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the matchday 10 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Rohr expressed respect for Nigeria but made it clear that sentiment would have no place on the pitch.

“I have a lot of friends in Nigeria, even in this team. Some of the players here are ones I brought into the squad,” Rohr said.

“But this is not a time for emotions or memories. The focus is on the match, it’s a big one, and we’re ready to compete.”

Reflecting on his past achievements with the Super Eagles, Rohr said the memories remain special but insisted his focus is now on writing history with Benin.

“The game against Nigeria is like a final for us, and we have a great opportunity to qualify for the World Cup,” he added.

“My time in Nigeria was wonderful, especially qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with two games to spare. But that’s history, this is a new chapter, and my goal is to achieve the same success with Benin.”
