Human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has warned that the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest could escalate if the Federal Government fails to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking to journalists during Monday’s protest in Abuja, Sowore said security operatives had tear-gassed him and other demonstrators at several locations, including Transcorp, Utako, and Apo.
According to him, the growing turnout at each venue shows that public frustration is mounting over the government’s continued detention of Kanu.
“Apo had the biggest turnout so far, and that shows that very soon this will get out of hand if they don’t act on releasing Nnamdi Kanu,” Sowore said.
He, however, clarified that the protesters were not calling for violence but were demanding justice and fair treatment for all citizens.
“We are not threatening violence. We are only saying that every Nigerian deserves the right to be treated as a citizen. If the government doesn’t want that, then those who want to go should be allowed to go,” he added.
