Rivers crisis: ‘Sleep with your two eyes closed, we’re in charge’ – Wike assures residents
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has asserted that he remains firmly in charge of Rivers State amid the ongoing political tensions in the state.
Addressing guests during the Wakirike Ethnic Nationality’s grand civic reception in Ogu, Rivers State on Saturday, Wike assured residents, saying they could “sleep with their two eyes closed because we are in charge.”
Wike also recounted how he recommended Boma Iyaye to President Bola Tinubu for the role of Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He said, “When I was called by the President about the NDDC executive director position coming to Rivers State, I was initially unsure of what to do.
At that moment, I didn’t know who to trust. I looked left and right and prayed for guidance, and I thank God that I was able to recommend Boma Iyaye to the President.”
The Minister emphasized the importance of appreciating people who make a positive difference. “Boma doesn’t have the money to buy me anything, neither does Sekibo.
But when people do well, saying ‘thank you’ is enough. I may not be the most intelligent or handsome person, but that is why I was entrusted with this position,” he said.
He praised Iyaye for using his new role to impact the lives of his people. “I have always told anyone willing to listen: when you have the chance to make a difference, seize it.
That opportunity may not come again. Make your people happy, because that is true happiness. Positions come with envy and criticism, but Boma, God will bless you for making your people happy. You have not disappointed me or the President.”
Concluding, Wike reiterated his control over the state, saying, “I can assure you, go home and sleep with your two eyes closed; we are in charge.”
