INEC announces June 20 date for Rivers South-East bye-election to replace Senator Mpigi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)) in Rivers State has scheduled Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of a bye-election to fill the vacant Rivers South-East Senatorial seat.

The election follows the death of Senator Barry Mpigi, which created a vacancy in the senatorial district.

According to the commission, voting will commence at 8:00 a.m. and close at 2:30 p.m. across the seven local government areas that make up the district.

A total of 88 registration areas and 1,629 polling units across Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Khana and Gokana LGAs will participate in the exercise.

The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, assuring stakeholders of a peaceful, transparent and credible bye-election.
