Bandits demand N1bn, 35 motorcycles for release of 37 Kaduna worshippers – Community cries out
Bandits are reportedly demanding N1 billion and 35 motorcycles before agreeing to release 37 worshippers abducted during attacks on churches in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Residents of the community have appealed to both federal and state authorities to urgently intervene and secure the release of the victims, who were kidnapped during Easter Sunday church services.
The President of the Kuturmi Development Association (KUDA), Dr. Joseph David Ariko, told DAILY POST that the community is incapable of meeting the ransom demand, describing it as far beyond the reach of residents who are largely farmers.
He added that the abductors have maintained constant communication with the community, insisting firmly on their conditions.
“They (bandits) called virtually every two days, demanding for N1bn and 35 motorcycles. They are not ready to reduce the amount of money they are demanding from the poor farmers, who in reality cannot afford to raise such amount of money.”
The attacks occurred when armed men stormed three churches St. Augustine Catholic Church, ECWA, and a Baptist church during Easter Sunday worship, killing five people and whisking away 37 others.
The victims have now spent about 45 days in captivity, with families left in distress and uncertainty over their safety and possible return.
Community leaders said the prolonged abduction has crippled normal life in the area, deepening fear and disrupting both social and economic activities, as residents continue to live in anxiety.
Dr. Ariko emphasized that the community has no option but to rely on government intervention, stressing that residents cannot afford the ransom being demanded.
He further called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted worshippers.
The community also appealed to humanitarian organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims and restoring peace to the area.
