WAEC appoints Amos Dangut as registrar, CEO
The West African Examinations Council WAEC has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026. He is the 14th Registrar of the examination body.
His five-year term will run until September 2031. He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
WAEC’s international governing board ratified his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting. The meeting took place in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Before his new role, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office. He held the position from October 2023 to September 2026.
The Council announced the appointment in a statement by Demianus G. Ojijeogu. He is the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra.
After starting his education career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994, Dangut joined WAEC in 1998. He had earlier worked as a WAEC examiner.
His career at the Council included several senior positions. These included Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division.
He later served as Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi.
A subsequent appointment made him Branch Controller in Yola. He also became Controller of the Post-Examinations Department.
The Council later appointed him Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja. He eventually became Deputy Registrar and Head of the National Office.
With more than two decades of experience, Dangut has worked extensively in examination administration and test development.
His work has also promoted the use of Information and Communications Technology in examination processes.
As Head of the Nigeria National Office, he supervised several digital initiatives. These included Computer-Based WASSCE and the serialization of examination question papers.
Among the other projects he oversaw was the Digital Electronic Marking System. The Digital Certificate Portal and WAEC E-Study Platform were also introduced under his leadership.
His responsibilities further covered the Digital Records Archive. He also oversaw digital systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds degrees in Animal Production, Animal Science and Education Administration and Planning.
His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Agriculture, two master’s degrees and a PhD in Animal Science.
Over the course of his career, he has served on the boards of NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB and Grange Educational Foundation.
He has represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
Beyond his administrative roles, Dangut has published articles in national and international journals. He has also presented papers at several conferences.
He currently represents the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa AEAA.
Professionally, he is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria STAN. He is also a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management NIM.
The Nigeria Examinations Committee commended Dangut for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006.
During his NYSC year, he also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government.
