Benue under siege: Gov Alia, NSA Ribadu clash over State’s security situation

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu have offered contrasting perspectives on the security situation in the state.

Governor Alia emphasized the severe challenges faced, describing Benue as being constantly besieged by terrorists, bandits, and armed militias.

He highlighted the devastating impact on local economies and the displacement of numerous residents due to ongoing attacks.

On the other hand, NSA Nuhu Ribadu acknowledged the presence of security threats in Benue but asserted that no part of Nigeria is under the control of non-state actors. This statement directly contrasts with Governor Alia’s depiction of the state’s security crisis.

The situation has worsened recently, particularly in the Sankera axis of Benue, which includes Ukum, Katsina-Ala, and Logo local government areas.

This region has witnessed a surge in violence, with coordinated attacks resulting in significant loss of life and widespread destruction of property.

On Tuesday, another tragic incident occurred, with at least 11 fatalities in an attack on the Afia community in Ukum Local Government Area.

Chief Orkaa Kaave (Ter Ukum) reported these latest casualties to NSA Ribadu during his visit, which was prompted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to express condolences and offer support to the people of Benue State amid the ongoing bloodshed.
