Benue: Varsity students, staff stranded as devastating flood hits Makurdi

Students and staff of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi, former known as UNIAGRIC have been left stranded after a devastating flood hit the Benue State capital.

IDOMA VOICE recalls that a few days ago, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, alerted Nigerians of impending flooding along the River Benue Basin.

According to the alert, the Cameroonian Government has plans to “open the flood gates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River”.

At the moment, some parts of the state have been flooded with many people, particularly rendered homeless.

Confirming the sad development in a SOS, Mimidoo Joy Gundu, former SU President, JSTUM, called on the federal/state governments and the school management to look into this problem before it gets worse and damages the road.

She wrote,

PLEASE EVERY GREAT MAKURDI SHOULD SHARE THIS POST THIS IS TOO MUCH!
We experience this every year.

Situation report this morning water blocked the road that link from SRS junction to Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi around (Antsa and Ichwa respectively).

This has been a huge obstacle for staff and students to get to school and it is very disheartening. I urge the Federal/State Government and the school management to look into this problem before it gets worse and damages the road.

A federal institution is located there and students need to study during week days not at home.
A quick action should be taken as soon as possible to ensure that this problem is resolved.
