The Vatican has officially announced the passing of Pope Francis, who died peacefully at 7:35 AM after a life spent in unwavering service to the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, confirmed the news on Sunday, stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

The 88-year-old pontiff had been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome since February 14, after experiencing breathing difficulties during a meeting. Diagnosed with bronchitis, Pope Francis was admitted for observation and treatment, leading to the cancellation of his scheduled events. Regular updates on his condition were issued by the Vatican throughout his stay.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis began his early career in chemistry, earning a diploma as a chemical technician. He joined the Jesuit novitiate in 1958 and went on to rise through the ranks of the Catholic Church, eventually becoming the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to hold the papacy.

His papacy was marked by efforts toward humility, inclusivity, and social justice, earning him admiration worldwide as a transformative figure in the modern Church.
