A man identified as Mallam Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, a native of Bundugudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State, residing in Calabar, has been arrested for allegedly impregnating his 15-year-old daughter, Amina.
The arrest was carried out by the Zone Six Human Rights Unit of the Nigeria Police Force on November 15, 2024, following a petition from the victim’s aunt, Aisha.
According to the petition, Aisha noticed physical changes in the teenager and took her to a hospital, where a pregnancy test revealed she was nine weeks pregnant. The victim accused her father of initiating the alleged abuse in 2023, claiming he started the relationship at a hotel and threatened her life to ensure her silence.
Further investigations by the police included medical examinations at the Police Hospital in Calabar, which confirmed the initial test results. The manager of Last Motor Hotel also stated that the suspect had frequently visited the hotel with the victim, but he was unaware of their relationship as father and daughter.
Umaru denied the allegations but could not explain how his daughter became pregnant under his care, as he had separated from her mother years earlier.
Zone Six Police PRO, SP Nelson Okpabi, stated that the suspect would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations if found guilty. He emphasized the importance of parental vigilance and urged caregivers to monitor their wards to prevent abuse.
