Kano woman to die by hanging for killing husband nine days after wedding

A High Court in Kano State has sentenced a newlywed woman, Saudat Jibril, to death by hanging after convicting her of murdering her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their marriage.

The verdict was delivered after the court concluded hearing evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence.

The incident happened in May 2025 in Farawa, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, where the couple had lived together for only nine days before the husband was allegedly killed.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by counsel to the Kano State Government, Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, called three witnesses to support its case.

The defence, represented by Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, presented Saudat Jibril as its only witness.

In her judgment, Justice Maryam Sabo held that the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The court accepted the prosecution’s evidence and dismissed the defendant’s account.

“The court finds the defendant guilty as charged and hereby sentences her to death by hanging,” Justice Sabo ruled.

Following the judgment, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service escorted Saudat Jibril from the courtroom to begin serving her sentence, pending the outcome of any appeal she may file.
