Breaking: Abducted ex-defence spokesman Maj.-Gen. rabe abubakar dies in bandits’ captivity
Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died in captivity two weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed his death on Saturday, stating that the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the government described the incident as a tragic loss despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his release.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement said.
According to the government, the late general died a natural death resulting from complications of diabetes and hypertension.
Mu’azu noted that the abduction and subsequent death of the retired officer represent not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but also a significant loss to the nation.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the urgent need for a united and intensified effort against criminal groups threatening peace and security across communities.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar rest in eternal peace,” the statement added.
The late general and his wife were reportedly kidnapped near the Matazu area of Katsina State while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.
Days after their abduction, the couple appeared in a video released by their captors. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three detained associates identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, as well as the return of livestock allegedly confiscated from them.
Rabe’s wife also appealed to the Katsina State Government and community leaders across five local government areas to facilitate compliance with the demands in order to secure their release.
