Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has appointed former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, as the Honorary Adviser on Sports. The announcement was made by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor, on Thursday.

Despite being from the South Eastern part of the country, Mikel was born in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. The 36-year-old began his football journey with the state-owned team, Plateau United.

Mikel’s career took off when he moved to Lyn Oslo in Norway at the age of 17 in 2004. He went on to have a remarkable career, winning multiple titles with Chelsea, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

During his illustrious 14-year international career between 2005 and 2019, Mikel represented Nigeria 91 times and scored six goals. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, leading the Super Eagles to victory.
