The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has reevaluated and subsequently reduced the recently increased tuition fees.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olanrewaju, issued an official statement today, revealing the outcome of discussions held between the management and student representatives. The student leaders had strongly advocated for a 50% reduction in the fees.
Olanrewaju affirmed that the university’s management had carefully considered the students’ concerns. However, it was emphasized that the initially proposed fees were deemed essential for the efficient functioning of the institution.
The statement quoted Vice Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, who graciously announced the revised fee structure:
Returning students in Humanities will now pay #76,000, down from the initial #89,200, while new Humanities students will pay #131,000 instead of the initial #151,200.
Returning students in Sciences and Technology will now pay #86,000, reduced from #101,200, with new students in these faculties paying #141,000 instead of the initial #163,200.
Returning students in Pharmacy and College of Health Sciences will now pay #109,000, down from #128,200, while new students in these faculties will pay #164,000 instead of the initial #190,000.
Additionally, the university management has agreed to allow the payment of fees in two equal installments, providing some relief for students. This decision comes after several consultations and engagements between the university and its student body.
