Senate confirms Joash Amupitan as new INEC Chairman
The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The confirmation took place on Thursday following a rigorous screening session during which Professor Amupitan responded to a series of questions from lawmakers on key national electoral issues.
During the exercise, senators quizzed the nominee on electoral reforms, measures to curb electoral malpractice, and strategies to strengthen INEC’s independence and credibility ahead of future elections.
Following the deliberations, the Senate unanimously approved Amupitan’s appointment. The upper chamber is expected to formally communicate its decision to President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate, urging prompt consideration and confirmation of Amupitan’s nomination in line with constitutional provisions.
