House of Reps nominate Ugochinyere as minority leader
Ikenga Ugochinyere, the lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, has been nominated as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
The nomination was backed by 61 members of the House drawn from various political parties, according to a letter addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas dated June 3, 2026.
The lawmakers said the decision reflected the preference of the majority of opposition members in the Green Chamber.
Ugochinyere, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action Peoples Party (APP), is expected to succeed Kingsley Chinda, who vacated the position after his own political realignment and emergence as a governorship candidate in Rivers State.
The nomination letter was signed by lawmakers from multiple opposition parties, including the ADC, APGA, LP, SDP, APM, PRP, and others, spanning several states across the federation.
The development marks a significant reshuffle within the House minority leadership as opposition lawmakers seek to reorganize their ranks ahead of future legislative engagements.
