WWC: I am devastated – Canada coach laments after 0-0 with Super Falcons

Beverly Priestman, the coach of the Canadian women’s national team, has expressed disappointment following their goalless draw against the Super Falcons of Nigeria in their opening fixture at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The highly anticipated Group B match resulted in a stalemate, leaving both teams with a point each.

Despite the disappointment, Priestman emphasized the importance of quickly moving on from the result and focusing on the remaining games in the group. She cited previous experiences at the Olympic Games, where her team started with a draw and went on to achieve success.

“This is tournament football and if I go to the Olympic Games that we won, we started with a draw, and so we’ve got to move on very quickly,” she said.

“You can get lost and be really down on that, and of course the team and I am devastated that we didn’t get three points.

“But at the end of the day, we got one and we took two from another team.”

While Canada had hoped for a triumphant start to the tournament, the Super Falcons, a formidable nine-time African champions, proved to be a tough opponent, denying the Canadian side a victory.

With Australia already taking early control of Group B after defeating Ireland 1-0 on Thursday, the competition remains intense, and every match becomes crucial for the teams vying for advancement in the Women’s World Cup.
