Zulum thanks Tinubu for retaining Shettima as 2027 running mate
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has commended President Bola Tinubu for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Zulum said Shettima’s retention marks a historic moment for Borno State and the North-East, as it is the first time an indigene of the region has risen to the position of vice president and been selected to continue for a possible second term.
The governor spoke with State House correspondents on Thursday after President Tinubu presented Shettima with the official certificate confirming his selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Tinubu presented the certificate to his deputy during a brief ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Zulum said he visited the State House to appreciate the president for renominating Shettima and to seek approval for governors and representatives from the North-East states to pay a formal thank-you visit.
“On behalf of the governors of the North-Eastern states, I want to appreciate the president. By next week, we shall be preparing to come and see him. We have never had it like this,” he said.
The governor recalled that while there had been previous attempts by the region to produce a vice president, the milestone achieved under Shettima’s emergence was unprecedented.
He added that Shettima’s position was not only significant to Borno State but also belonged to the entire Northern region, thanking Nigerians for accepting one of the region’s sons as the nation’s number two citizen.
