2027 election: APC chieftain Okechukwu warns of possible run-off

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress APC, Osita Okechukwu, has warned that President Bola Tinubu could face a run-off in the 2027 presidential election.

Okechukwu said those assuring Tinubu that he would win without a run-off might not be giving the president an honest assessment of the political situation.

The former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria VON spoke on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources.

He said his 48 years of involvement in partisan politics had shaped his assessment of the coming election, despite his desire for the APC and Tinubu to win.

“I want my party and President Tinubu to win, but my assessment is that anyone telling the president there will be no run-off may not be sincere. They should be honest with him about the possibility,” he said.

Okechukwu also appealed to presidential hopefuls, including African Democratic Congress ADC candidate Atiku Abubakar and Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC candidate Peter Obi, to discourage violence ahead of the election.

He warned that political violence could have devastating consequences, citing Nigeria’s experience in the mid-1960s, when political instability contributed to bloodshed and the civil war.

“I appeal to Peter Obi, Atiku and other contenders to reject violence. The history of other countries shows that violence does not benefit any nation,” he added.
