The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has reassured Nigerians of the military’s unwavering commitment to addressing the recent surge in insecurity across the country. He also announced key initiatives aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s defence capabilities.

Speaking to State House correspondents following a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu and top defence officials at the Aso Rock Villa, General Musa disclosed that the President has approved the procurement of additional air assets to strengthen the ongoing fight against insurgency.

The CDS confirmed that new military equipment has already been acquired to intensify operations against terrorists, whose attacks have notably escalated, especially in the northern regions.

“Mr. President has issued clear directives to intensify all efforts. We are also collaborating closely with neighboring countries, as the porous nature of our borders continues to worsen security challenges,” General Musa stated.

He explained that military operations are being scaled up across multiple theaters of operation, with particular focus on enhancing air power and acquiring critical security hardware.

Beyond kinetic measures, General Musa emphasized the government’s focus on non-military strategies, including community development initiatives designed to reduce insecurity at the grassroots level.

“The President is engaging with state governors to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach the people, which will significantly contribute to lowering insecurity,” he added.

The CDS linked the rise in insecurity to a larger global threat posed by terrorists and jihadists active in the Sahel region, highlighting how Nigeria’s porous borders facilitate these challenges.

He affirmed that discussions with President Tinubu are ongoing to review and formulate comprehensive solutions to the nation’s security issues.

“Mr. President is deeply concerned about the current security situation and is determined to find lasting solutions. We, as security chiefs, have assured him of our dedication and continuous efforts to bring the situation under control,” General Musa said.

The CDS called on Nigerians to support the Armed Forces and security agencies in their efforts to combat insurgency. He also warned citizens against spreading false information, noting that videos from other countries are sometimes circulated on social media as if they were from Nigeria.

“It is crucial for everyone to cooperate with the Armed Forces and security agencies. If you witness anything suspicious or improper, report it immediately. Action will be taken, including against any personnel found culpable,” he urged.
